About

Edgar Serrano – Founder of The Bilingual Spark

Growing up in Mexico City and navigating multiple cultures, I developed a deep appreciation for the power of language — not just to teach, but to connect and uplift.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching diverse learners and witnessing the transformative impact of bilingualism in real time.

In 2018, I was honored as Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese — an experience that affirmed my belief in education as a force for belonging and pride.

Through roles such as President of the National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL) and Executive Director of the Mississippi Foreign Language Association (MFLA), I’ve had the opportunity to work with educators across the country to advocate for more inclusive, effective, and joyful language education.

The Bilingual Spark is the result of these experiences — a platform built to celebrate culture, nurture pride, and help learners grow through language.

At the heart of it all is a simple belief:
Raíces y Alas — roots to honor where we come from, and wings to grow through language.

Why I Created Animales de México

I didn’t just want to make a coloring book.
I wanted to create something that helps kids see the world with curiosity — and recognize the beauty in different cultures.

Animales de México was born from that vision:
A bilingual journey through language, storytelling, and the native animals of Mexico.

It’s for kids taking their first steps into Spanish...
And for the families and educators who want those steps to lead somewhere meaningful.

Because when we teach through joy and story, we do more than pass on words —
we open windows. We build bridges. We spark something that lasts.
